My youngest loves magical creatures and dragons are her favorite. One of the books she loves to read most is Dragons Love Tacos written by Adam Rubin and illustrated by Daniel Salmieri. I remember the first time we read it, she could not stop laughing at the dressed up dragons, the silliness about taco parties, and the reactions of the dragons to the spicy peppers.
Before we read Dragons Love Tacos, she wouldn't try tacos at all. She didn't want to try the crunchy taco shells, the meat, or any of the toppings. After reading the book, I told her that if dragons like tacos, maybe she will too. It worked!! Now she enjoys our weekly tacos as much as the rest of us.
Today I have a book review and a recipe for you! When we make tacos, I like to use an easy to make, and very tasty, spice blend for seasoning our tacos. I used to buy the packets at the store, but they are full of preservatives and homemade tastes so good and is quick to mix together.

The dragons in this book aren't scary and mean. The wonderful illustrations make the diverse dragons look happy, a bit silly, and very cute. The simple story brings on laughter from each page.
We first read this book when I had a 6 & 9 year old. Both of them loved the book. They sat looking at the pictures, laughing at the dragons antics, and wondering how many dragons could fit in our house for a taco party. I think that the book is wonderful for ages 3 and up.
Taco Recipe - Homemade Taco Seasoning
Our homemade taco seasoning is great on ground beef or turkey, shredded chicken, or thinly sliced beef. I use this same seasoning mix for fajitas, taco soup, add a bit to our refried beans, and when I make southwestern ranch dressing. So tasty!!
Ingredients for taco seasoning
2 tablespoons ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
For added heat add a bit of ground cayenne pepper (but not if you invite dragons to eat with you)
Mix the spices together and store in an air tight container. This seasoning mixture usually makes enough to make tacos two times.
Ingredients for Tacos
3/4 pound ground meat (turkey is more heart healthy)
2 T taco seasoning
1 T water
taco shells - crunchy or soft
shredded cheese
shredded lettuce
chopped tomatoes
sliced olives
green onions - sliced
sour cream
salsa
guacamole (Our favorite Homemade recipe)
Brown meat in frying pan. With higher fat meat you will need to drain the fat from the pan.
Sprinkle with taco seasoning, then add water and stir. Cook for 5-8 minutes over med-low heat until water is gone.
Add seasoned meat to taco shell and add your favorite toppings. Eat and enjoy!
