Dragonwatch by Brandon Mull - Book Review

Adventure abounds in the newest book by bestselling author Brandon Mull. There is magic, fantasy, and, of course, dragons in this new book that middle grade readers will love. They won't be able to put the book down...which I know because my 11 year old was reading it well after her bedtime under the covers with a flashlight the night it came in the mail.

Brandon Mull new fantasy book Dragonwatch

Generally I write book reviews on here all by myself. This time, I turned to my 11 year old daughter for help in today's post. I thought that having her share what she thought of the book would be most effective, I mean she is the target market (8-12 year olds) and so her thoughts are more relevant than an adults. I hope you like her very first book review and I know that she would love to hear your comments!

A few weeks ago I received an email asking if I would be willing to help promote an upcoming book for older kids and they would be willing to send me and advance readers copy. I get emails like that quite often and generally I just skip by them. Brandon Mull's name jumped out at me and I read closer. An opportunity to read his newest book before it came out? Yes!! I would gladly do it!

You see, while I may be old enough to have an 11 year old child, I still enjoy reading books for children. No judgement please. So many children's books encourage them to use their imaginations and stress the point that anything is possible....and I love that message.

When we received Dragonwatch in the mail, my daughter screamed and jumped around, hugging me and the book, and I felt like I was some sort of superhero for making it possible for her to read this book before all of her friends. She has read all of the Fablehaven seriesThe Candyshop War books, and the Spirit Animals books that Brandon Mull wrote. She loves fantasy and couldn't wait to read the newest book about Kendra and Seth Sorenson.

Let's take a look at the book!

Dragonwatch book publication information

In the long-awaited sequel to the Fablehaven series, the dragons who have been kept at the dragon sanctuaries no longer consider them safe havens, but prisons and they want their freedom. The dragons are no longer our allies....

In the hidden dragon sanctuary of Wyrmroost, Celebrant the Just, King of the Dragons, plots his revenge. He has long seen the sanctuaries as prisons, and he wants nothing more than to overthrow his captors and return the world to the Age of Dragons, when he and his kind ruled and reigned without borders. The time has come to break free and reclaim his power.

No one person is capable of stopping Celebrant and his dragon horde. It will take the ancient order of Dragonwatch to gather again if there is any chance of saving the world from destruction. In ancient times, Dragonwatch was a group of wizards, enchantresses, dragon slayers, and others who originally confined the majority of dragons into sanctuaries. But nearly all of the original Dragonwatch members are gone, and so the wizard Agad reaches out to Grandpa Sorenson for help.

As Kendra and Seth confront this new danger, they must draw upon all their skills, talents, and knowledge as only they have the ability to function together as a powerful dragon tamer. Together they must battle against forces with superior supernatural powers and breathtaking magical abilities.

How will the epic dragon showdown end? Will dragons overthrow humans and change the world as we know it?

New Brandon Mull middle grade book follow up to Fablehaven series

Book review of Dragonwatch by Brandon Mull

written by my 11 year old daughter
"I found this story incredible! It kept me interested until the very last page. So many exciting things happen in this book, so to me it is at the top of my favorite book list!

I really liked this book because of a great mix of adventure, magic, romance, fantasy, and so much more. If you like dragons, adventure, and crazy creatures, you will love it!

My favorite part was when Kendra and Seth are going to visit the old dragon, Dromadus, and try to find out where the hidden scepter is. So exciting!

I would recommend Dragonwatch to kids from 4th-8th grade. In conclusion, this book was one of my favorite books in the long line of Brandon Mull books that I have read."

There you have it! A review written by an 11 year old huge fan of fantasy books, Brandon Mull, magic, and dragons.

My thoughts
I loved the Fablehaven series and was excited to read the newest continuation of the same people in a new setting. Brandon Mull does a great job describing characters and events that make it seem real to you...while you are busy reading about magical creatures and places that don't really exist.

If you haven't read the Fablehaven series yet, you will still enjoy the book. While there are our favorite people (and magical beings) from the Fablehaven series, there are plenty of new characters introduced and it is a new storyline. Of course, you will probably find yourself wanting to pick up the previous books just so you can enjoy the writing, world building, and story.

I think that this book is a great family read! When reading together, I feel that it's family time spent well and even younger children will enjoy it.
