If you are looking for a wonderfully written, political thriller for a YA audience, with a little bit of sassiness too, then The Fixer is the perfect book for you. The highlighted blurb for the book says "This thriller YA is Scandal meets Veronica Mars." They had me at Veronica Mars.

The Fixer by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Synopsis

Tess Kendrick has lived on a ranch with her grandfather since her parents died when she was young. One day her sister Ivy shows up to take her to live in Washington DC while her grandfather is in special care in Boston. Tess hasn't talked to her sister regularly for the past few years and doesn't know what is going on in Ivy's life. Tess starts school at the prestigious Hardwicke Academy. Life revolves around politics and power, in school and out. Tess becomes the fixer at school, following in Ivy's footsteps.

A conspiracy surfaces and Tess wants to get to the bottom of the truth. It's a dangerous road she goes down though. Along the way, she learns about some family secrets that will change her life.

My Thoughts

This is one of the best books I've read in the last 5 months. Jennifer Lynn Barnes writes an engaging story with well written characters in a book that you just can't put down. I picked this up for some light reading before going to bed...I was up until 4am because I kept telling myself "just one more chapter". You will probably be drawn into this book too, so grab a snack before you start reading.

Tess is a strong young woman who doesn't like bullies, looks out for people that are being taken advantage of, morally knows right from wrong, and likes to have right win in the end. She doesn't let people push her around. Tess has had to deal with a lot in her young life and it has made her stronger in so many ways.

Tess makes a few friends at her new school, not caring to be in with the ultra popular crowd. What I liked was how loyal Tess was, she did what she could to help her friends. I also liked that Tess had friendships with guys. There wasn't romance in the story (no ridiculous insta-love at all) or any love triangles like in so many YA books you read.

I liked the way that Jennifer Lynn Barnes writes the conspiracy and how we see a little deeper into political life as the story goes on. The pace of the book was great - you aren't overwhelmed by the new things that pop up. I know I'm being vague, but I don't want to ruin the story.

I would recommend this to anyone that is over the age of 15 or so. I think that it would appeal to adults as well, especially if they enjoy thrillers or political storylines but want a clean book to read. I am looking forward to the release of the next book in the series in June.

My Rating

I loved The Fixer. I originally checked it out from the library with no intention of buying a copy. After reading it twice in 2 weeks and still loving it, I had to place an order for a copy so I can have it to read whenever I want.
